Thumbshot – Privacy Policy

Last updated: 21 October 2026

Thumbshot has no accounts and no servers of its own. This page explains what happens to your photos and to the information the app keeps.

Your photos

The camera is only used while the camera screen is open. If you turn on Detect faces, the smile shutter, the V-sign shutter, the eyes-open check or Blur the background in the settings, the camera picture or the photo is worked on, on your phone: to draw a box on each face, to tell a smile or open eyes, to see a V-sign held up, or to blur what is behind you. Nothing from it is stored or sent; with Blur the background the saved photo is replaced by the blurred one. These features use models from Google Play services, which Google Play services downloads to your phone the first time one is needed; this app sends nothing when that happens. The V-sign shutter also uses a hand model, which Google Play delivers to your phone the first time it is needed; this app sends nothing then either. In the setup tutorial the camera can be tried live, and nothing from that is saved. If you turn on Save location in the settings, Thumbshot asks for the Location permission and, when you take a photo, saves your phone's location inside that photo; it is used for nothing else and not stored or sent anywhere else, but anyone you share the photo with can read it. A photo you take is saved in the folder where your phone's own camera saves its photos (or, if you choose this in the settings, in a Thumbshot folder), where your gallery app shows it. Thumbshot does not look at, upload or share your photos, and it does not read the photos already on your phone. Nothing is recorded or sent in the background. The photos you take are shown as small pictures on the camera so that you can look at them, share them or delete them. A deleted photo is moved to your phone's bin, as in the Photos apps, where it can be restored, and so are the other photos of a burst that keeps only its best shot; photos you delete in the Photos app or another app disappear from those pictures too.

Where it goes

Nowhere. Photos and settings stay on your phone unless you share a photo yourself. When you use Share, or Open in photo app, the photo is handed to the app you choose, through Android, and that app handles it under its own privacy policy and terms. When another app asks Thumbshot for a photo (a messaging app, say), the photo you take is handed to that app and to no one else, through Android, and it handles it under its own privacy policy and terms. Nothing passes through any server run by this app.

Stored on your phone

Your settings, such as where you put the shutter, the timer and the look of the camera bubble, are kept on your phone. If you have Android backup turned on, Android may include these settings in your Google backup, which is managed by Google and not by this app.

Permissions

The camera permission lets the app take photos. The optional camera bubble asks for permission to display over other apps, so the bubble can appear, and to show notifications, so Android can show the notification that keeps it running. It can also open Android's battery settings if you choose to exempt the app from battery optimization. The Location permission is asked for only if you turn on Save location, and is used only to save your phone's location inside the photos you take. The app does not ask for access to your contacts, your storage or your microphone.

Other

The app contains no advertising or analytics of its own. A one-time Pro purchase, if you choose it, is handled by Google Play; the app does not receive your payment details, only whether the purchase has been made. If you use Send feedback, your email app opens with the app version, Android version and phone model written in the message, which you can read and edit before sending.

Children

Thumbshot is not directed at children, and it does not knowingly collect any information from anyone.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date.
